Many tee boxes barely had any grass to hit off of, the sand traps had standing water and were mainly hard, compacted mix of some sand and red clay. The greens were VERY slow, many with patches of crab grass. To be honest, there was some mowing activity going on, but even the fairways needed work. If your shot ventured anywhere off the fairway, the thick grass and clover made it almost impossible to find, even around the greens. Certainly not the course we anticipated for $48. I usually play much nicer for much less.
Although under new ownership in the past couple of years, the course has gone downhill this year. Rough and fairways not mowed regularly. Greens are like putting on shag carpet with patched of crabgrass. I have a players card and have been playing this course for 7 years and have never seen it in this bad of shape. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. I stayed at Smith Mountain Lake for a week and had the worst experience at this course. The fairways were horrible with huge holes in the middle of some. they are in the process of replacing the fairways but in the meantime stay away! Also the houses are way to close to the course. Residence have put up signs saying if you damage their home they will find you. this made it very distracting to play!
