Have played this course several times over the last 20 years. Each time I have played the course, it was in excellent condition. Over time the course has been made more difficult by upgrade of the greens with some of the revamped greens shaped like an amoeba allowing placement of pins in fingerlike extensions. Makes the shotmaking tougher and the putting more difficult. As I recall, the management over the years has had some difficulty dewatering the 16th, 17th and 18th fairways. still a tough layout with some interesting shotmaking.
Love this course. Has a little bit of everything. Front nine nice and open with elevation change on 1 and 9. Back nine tightens up and makes you pick a shot more. They re-did the greens on 16 and 17 the past 2 years. GPS is for distance only and updates quickly. Some holes it will give a first timeer tips on how to play. Staff always great to be around. Never a problem here once. Love to play 5-10 times a year.
Our golf outing (Hilltown Golf Outing - hilltowngolfouting.com) has always had Sugarloaf GC as our primary course we play for our golf outing ever since we started our annual golf trip 20+ years ago, and there are many reasons why it will remain our home course for our outing. The course is a fantastic array of different types of holes to challenge all levels of golfers and that requrire a golfer to use virtually every club in his/her bag. It is a superb mountain course with many wonderful views along the entire course. As far as public courses go, it is always in solid condition and is very competitively priced, plus with its newly added cart GPS system, it is keeping up w/modern technology.Sugarloaf boasts a fantastic bar and dining area with a wide variety of yummy food choices, anywhere from your basic bar fare of burgers and sandwiches to delicious sit-down buffet meals that can feed the starving army of a full 144 golfer outing. The owners, Wayne and Judy Knelly, as well as their entire staff are the friendliest in the business and always have been more than accommodating to our outing and its players. The biggest reason why we love to come back every year is simple...it is because these people care about their customers and go well beyond the call of duty to make sure everything is more than just satisfactory. One does not need to think hard to figure out why Golf Digest rates this a 4-star course/operation.Whether if you are an individual player, small or large group, do yourself a favor and check out Sugarloaf for your next round or outing...it will be one of the best golfing decisions on where to play that you will ever make.
Sugarloaf is a wonderful mix of holes and great views for a mountain course. The front 9 is an open layout where the back 9 is more of a traditional, tree-lined mountain course. Within the past few years, they recently added some long, linksy grass to some of the open areas on the front 9 to toughen up some of the wide-open areas as well as on a few holes on the back. There are some shorter holes on the course that are fairly easy and give you a chance to score, but do not be deceived by the short par 4 #4 hole, whose green has many undulations where you must be below the hole. If you think you have the game and are brave enough to play the tips on this course, brace yourself for some tough holes, specifically the 15th hole, a par 3, 266 yard hole over water to a green on a plateau as well as another par 3 that goes 225-230 yards (#7). This course is solid for all types of players, from beginners to scratch golfers, and the price is right, w/green fees ranging from low $30's during the week to mid $40's on the weekend. The owners & staff are top notch, and the bar/restaurant accommodations & menu offerings are solid. All things considered (course, price, and staff), this is a solid 4-star value!!
